- In addition to mass transit contributions, commuters choose to spend a national average of $6000.00 per year to own and operate their own vehicle.
- In 2000 the national average commuter time is 9 hours per week and increasing annually.
- Projected population growth along the Wasatch Front is expected to increase from presently 1.7 million to 2.7 million by 2020 and to 5 million by 2050. With this in mind residence of the Wasatch Front can expect to under go another 5-year I-15 reconstruction in about 10-15 years unless decisions are made now to utilize alternative transportation.
- The 2000 average building cost per parking structure stall has increased to $12,000.00- $15,000.00. This cost increase is directly related to any increase in monthly parking.
- Vehicle miles driven by Americans in increasing by 2% a year, which is three times as fast as the country’s population.
- The population of Utah is growing at twice the national average, and the population along the Wasatch Front is predicted to increase from 1.6 million to 2.7 million.
- The average American spends $6000 per year to buy, maintain, insure, and regulate their automobile. In addition, they pay $3000 to $4000 a year for infrastructure, policing, parking, and other related services.
- The average cost of a minor non-injury “fender bender” with an insurance deductible of $500 is $3200 out of pocket with lost time, car rental, premium increases, deductible, etc.
- Gas taxes and vehicle registration fees only cover 23% of the money allocated to utah’s Cenntenial Highway Fund. The remaining 77% is subsidized by other forms of tax.
